The Spine and the Nervous System

Dec 11, 2024 | Chiropractic news, Spine Health, The Nervous System

The spine is the body’s central support structure that connects different parts of our body together and allows us to move as one unit. It is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae, and soft tissue structures such as intervertebral discs and spinal ligaments.

The discs between the vertebrae are spongy in nature. They allow for movement and act as shock-absorbers when pressure is transmitted through the body. Discs are present between every vertebra within the spine apart from the upper cervical spine. Discs provide the spine with stability. The upper cervical spine anatomy is unique, and primary held in place by muscles and ligaments. Because of this, the upper cervical spine is very mobile, but the least stable part of the spine.

Exploring Vertebral Misalignments and Chiropractic Care

The spine houses the nervous system, the system responsible for allowing us to express life.  The nervous system is split up into 2 parts, the central and peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system (CNS) is composed of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is protected by the skull and the spinal cord, the spine. Its function is to send and receive message from the environment to various parts of the body. Our body will then adapt to whatever information is received.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is an extension of the CNS. It relays information from muscles, skin and organs back to the CNS to be processed. A portion of the PNS is called the autonomic nervous system. This division of the nervous system governs aspects of our being which is outside of our conscious control such as heart rate, blood pressure and digestive system.

Understanding Your Nervous System

Everything in the body has its place and function. However, if our body encounters too much stress, physically, chemically or emotionally our body lacks the ability to adapt to it and therefore results in reduced function. Over time, this will result in vertebral subluxation, a misalignment within the upper cervical spine. This will lead to pressure and interference of the nervous system. The nervous system’s ability to communicate with the body and vis versa will become affected and the quantity of information received will be reduced. Over time, this will start to develop into symptoms. Ensuring proper brain and body communication is vital for optimal function of the body.
