Development and Chiropractic

The way in which we develop physically and psychologically depends on the function of our nervous system. From the trauma of birth to the accumulation of small falls, the stress of everyday life can affect the alignment of a child’s spine, directly impacting the nervous system. Chiropractic care can support optimal development during the early stages of life through the correction of vertebral subluxation.

First Years

During the first year of a baby’s life, its brain doubles in size and is 90% grown at the age of 5. A baby’s brain is forming over 1 million new neural connections per second. It absorbs external and internal information at rapid speeds. If there is interference within a child’s system due to vertebral subluxation, that will in turn affect the amount/quantity of information that is being processed. If present, it can result in neurological developmental issues such as behavioural problems and speech delay. That’s not to mention physical symptoms such as poor sleeping habits. We can trace all these symptoms back to the central nervous system and interference in communication between the brain and body.

The Problem

When a misalignment is present in the upper cervical spine, there is interference at the level of the brain stem which will affect the cranial nerves. If the nerve supply to the ears is affecting our ability to hear and perceive auditory information, it will make it harder to understand and learn language. If the nerve supply to our mouth, throat and tongue are being interfered with, it will be harder to form and pronounce the correct words.

According to the Office of National Statistics (2024) around 2.5% of children in the UK have learning difficulties, around 349,000 children. Dr Yannick Pauli, president of the Swiss Chiropractic Paediatric Association, conducted a study looking at the effects of chiropractic care on children suffering with learning disabilities and dyslexia and found strong evidence to suggest ‘Chiropractic care may help in various cognitive abilities that are essential to learning. What is important to note here is that chiropractic care isn’t claiming to have a ‘cure’ for the symptoms themselves, rather that the correction of an underlying central nervous system dysfunction due to vertebral subluxation allows the body to function optimally. Build into all of us is the wisdom of the body’s ability to heal and a system free from interference, allows that wisdom to be expressed fully.
